Heute vor 70 Jahren: Orson Welles schockiert die US-Amerikaner mit einem Hörspiel über die Invasion der Außerirdischen ... damals live im Radio, heute zum nachhören ...
Auf den Tag genau 70 jahre ist es her, als Orson Welles die ameriaknische Öffentlichkeit zu tiefst schockierte: mit einem Live-Hörspiel über die Invasion der USA durch Außerirdische. Die Menschen wurden panisch – auch regelmäßige Hinweise während des Hörspiels, dass es sich um eine fiktive Story handele, halfen nichts. Es war schlicht zu realistisch. Fingierte Live-Schaltungen zu den Landeplätzen der Raumschiffe, geschickte Atmos und Sounds ließen den US-amerikanischen Radiohörern das Blut in den Adern gefrieren. Ein großes Stück Radio- und Mediengeschichte, denn: Die Schockwirkung war erwünscht:
Orson Welles war mitten in einen Medienkrieg zwischen Rundfunkbetreibern und einem ihrer schwersten Konkurrenten, der „MC Carthy Show“, geraten; ein Bericht unterstellte Orson Welles sogar, für den Tod eines Menschen verantwortlich gewesen zu sein. Orson Welles und sein Drehbuchautor Howard Koch nutzten das Spektakel als Karrierechance, an Welles blieb aber in der Folgezeit immer der Makel eines Zauberlehrlings haften. Welles gab später zu Protokoll, er habe nicht mit dem Erfolg des Hörspiels gerechnet und daher den Bezug zu Halloween hergestellt, um wenigstens irgendwie aufzufallen.
