Wenngleich man natürlich anhand solcher News nie wirklich weiß, was einen dort dann in Realität erwartet. Dennoch:
The sound of fashion
People’s personal fashion experiences provide unique insider perspectives on the industry in the British Library’s first ever exhibition dedicated to fashion history. Entitled Fashion Lives, it features testimonies from an array of individuals from the post-war period and focuses on details of techniques, skills and practices of an ever-modernising industry.
Curator Alistair O’Neill of the London College of Fashion, has sourced materials from the National Life Story Collection at the British Library’s Sound Archive making this an opportunity to hear first-hand accounts from ordinary workers as well as experts. There are interviews with pioneering fashion PR Percy Savage, owner of the legendary King’s Road boutique Mr Freedom, Tommy Roberts and John Church, founder of archetypal English shoemakers, Church’s Shoes. Contemporary fashion folk including designers Shelley Fox, Timothy Everest and Julie Verhoeven, provide feedback on the way techniques have changed.
Alongside the in-depth oral histories, there’s also printed ephemera, textiles, magazines, sketches, samplers and tools on show. Design duo Eley Kishimoto were commissioned to create a striking backdrop, while the exhibition itself has been designed by William Hall. The British Library has stocked up on fashion books to accompany the exhibition, so once you’ve experienced the oral Fashion Lives, read up on The King’s Road (Max Decharne £18.95), Founders of Savile Row (Stephen Howarth, £19.99) and The Way We Wore – A Life In Threads (Roberts Elms £12.99).
