My Setup: Echospace
Live spielen mit ProTools

I use a pentium 4 (3.4 ghz) laptop w/4 gig’s of ram running windows xp and using various audio plugins and protools for arrangement and output. Typically I assign outputs of the mixes to separate channels on the soundcard with each output running through its own hardware signal chain on a specific channel.
Worauf kommt es bei einem perfekten SetUp an? Welchen Anspruch hast du an dein eigenes Liveset?
I am not sure which ingredients make a set perfect or in-perfect, I suppose if your happy with the set and it’s perfect to you that is all that matters. For me though it’s all about the effects, if i have a proper effects chain on a good mixing board with some nice outboard effects units on the mixing console’s effects sends, i am really happy. I like to turn knobs and use the mixing board as the main musical tool in a live show, mixing in and out of tracks and using effects to do so. A good old tape delay and stage echo can work magic in a live environment, you can use the effects as an instrument. One tool I found most interesting in a live set is the Red Sound C-Loop, something we used a lot of in the last tour and it made every set drastically different as you sample on the fly and not one set would sound the same. Most importantly though I think your setup should be simple but effective. When i did more live PA’s in the USA it was much easier to get gear from show to show, while playing in Europe its much harder to do that and i find were very limited.
Mit welchen Problemen ist man immer wieder konfrontiert?
The only thing that comes to mind is what i addressed above, not having the resources to bring out a studio on tour to Europe. In the U.S. I’ve done quite a few performances where an entire stage was filled with Rack’s of hardware and 3-4 analog synthesizers. It’s hard to find clubs to pay for shipping for over 500 Kilo’s of equipment!
Laptop ja oder nein!?
Yes, Laptop’s are the best tool in a live setting, there really is nothing else out there you can use to do as much as a laptop can in a live environment. With the help of programs like Ableton’s Live, you can bring all of your music made in a room filled of gear and virtually bring it with you on tour with the help of a computer. It saved us on the last tour as we were initially thinking of mixing everything down to Roland VS880′s multi-track recorders but as you may know they are quite heavy and have limited functionality in a live environment. Without a laptop European touring wouldn’t even be an option for me.
