What can you do with a blank canvas for music and visual performance? Musician, visualist, and writer Peter Kirn (createdigitalmusic.com) shows how he works with free and open source tools Pure Data (Pd) and Processing. First, he demonstrates some simple tricks with MIDI and visual structure using Processing and Pd, so you can see how even someone new to coding or visual patching can explore basic ideas with these tools, without being an expert. You might build a simple sequencer or arpeggiator, or produce live visualizations of notes in colorful geometric animations. Having seen the basics, Kirn will then demonstrate how he builds these into his own live AV performance work, using Pd, Processing, and the iPad, and the open source hardware synth of which Kirn is co-designer,
MeeBlip.
